Algirdas Saudargas (born April 17, 1948 in Kaunas ) is a Lithuanian conservative politician of the party Tėvynės Sąjunga - Lietuvos krikščionys demokratai , former diplomat .

Life

After graduating from the Aleksonis Middle School in Žaliakalnis , Saudargas made his university degree in biophysics at the Kaunas Medical Institute in 1972 and then worked as a research assistant until 1977 and 1982–1990. From 1977 to 1982 he taught mathematics at the Lietuvos žemės ūkio akademija .

From 1995 to 1999 he was chairman of Tėvynės Sąjunga. He was a member of the Seimas from 1990 to 2004. From 1990 to 1992 and from 1996 to 2000 he was Foreign Minister of Lithuania . He was also Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to the Holy See from 2004 to 2008 . He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2009 .

His son is Paulius Saudargas (* 1979), biophysicist and politician.

EU parliamentarians

Saudargas is in the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats).

He is a member of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs , the Delegation to the Committee on Parliamentary Cooperation EU-Ukraine and the Delegation to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly. He is a deputy in the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and in the delegation for relations with Belarus.
