Aliaa Magda Elmahdy ( Arabic علياء المهدي; alternative spelling Al-Mahdy, also Alia al-Mahdi; * 16th November 1991 ) is an Egyptian blogger , Femen - activist , feminist and participant of the April 6 Youth Movement . She studies film studies and lives in Sweden .

activities

She became known by posting photos on her blog in November 2011 in which she was naked except for red shoes and stockings. She described the photos as "screams against a society full of violence, racism, sexism, sexual harassment and hypocrisy".

The photos shook the whole of Egypt, as they strongly shook social conventions. As a result, Elmahdy was showered with a shit storm of death threats and escaped attempted rape. Elmahdy received global support from feminist circles, but received very little support from the Egyptian left , which feared bad publicity. In Israel, around 40 women gathered naked for a group photo to support Elmahdy.

After the publication of her self-portrait, Elmahdy called for further protest photos to be sent to her, which she published on her blog.

She left Egypt in March 2012 after being invited to a congress in Stockholm . She reported receiving death threats and being abducted. In Sweden she cooperated with Femen in an action critical of religion, in which she and two other activists exposed their bodies on December 20, 2012 in front of the Egyptian embassy in Stockholm. On Aliaa's body was the words "Sharia is not a Constitution", she was holding a Koran in front of her waist and had an Egyptian flag slung over her head. She carried out another action in June 2013 with two other Femen activists in a Stockholm mosque.

In August 2014, Elmahdy and Femen published a picture of her menstruating and defecating with another activist on the flag of the terrorist organization Islamic State .
