Alice Phoebe Lou (born July 19, 1993 in Cape Town ) is a South African singer-songwriter .

Life

Lou grew up in Kommetjie on the west coast of the Cape Peninsula in South Africa, where her parents worked as documentary filmmakers ; As a child she took piano lessons, as a teenager she taught herself to play the guitar by herself . In 2010, the then 16-year-old spent the summer holidays with her aunt in Paris , where she met some street artists and practiced fire poi for the first time . After returning to South Africa and completing school at a Waldorf school , Lou left her home country at the age of 18 for a " gap year " again for Europe , first traveling to Amsterdam . There she earned her living with performances as a fire dancer, and during a subsequent stay in Berlin she also played self- composed pieces of music and interpretations of well-known songs.

In 2013 she finally moved to Berlin, where she has been performing as a street musician ever since. In 2014 she produced her first EP with Momentum , and two years later her debut album Orbit was released . She financed the latter herself and, despite some offers from well-known record companies, decided on a smaller label and against a permanent record contract, also because she spoke out against the commercialization of her music; for the same reason she declined the invitation of the English musician James Blunt to play in the opening act of his European tour. Despite everything, Lou has now been a guest at various major festivals and, in addition to her street performances, also gives concerts.

Alice Phoebe Lou lives in Berlin-Neukölln .
