action
In the Mexican village of Santa Bonita, the imperious landowner Vargas Diaz discovered a gold treasure in 1862. On the traditional Day of the Dead, residents die in an explosion during the festival. 90 years later, Thomas White traveled to Mexico with his wife Sarah and his two children Ricky and Lilly in 1952 and stopped in Santa Bonita for an overnight stay. In the only hotel in the village they are welcomed by the strange old woman Oleta and a young woman named Martia. Ricky is bewitched by the old woman with an incomprehensible formula. After Lilly has discovered her little brother in the room, who now looks like a zombie, she flees in fear into the street, where she is overwhelmed by the villagers in zombie form.
53 years later, on November 1, 2005, Day of the Dead, lovers Joss and Alicia are out and about in their car. Lost, they stop in Santa Bonita to ask for directions. There, however, they go in procession, where they meet a woman with her tongue cut off who was to be offered as a sacrifice. The summoned Sheriff Blanco takes the woman into custody for her protection. Since the car is unfit to drive, they take a room in the hotel, where they are received by the same women as the Whites 53 years earlier. Joss calls his friend Tyler and his girlfriend Erica to ask them to pick him up and Alicia. In the bathroom, Alicia appears to Ricky for a brief moment. And otherwise strange things also take their course.
After Tyler and Erica arrive, they all decide to spend the night somewhere else. Joss wants to inform the sheriff, but only discovers the woman's cut tongue in his office. Horrified, he shares this with the others, and they set off in a panic. But the villagers, all of them zombies, have already gathered in front of the hotel. All four hide in the hotel. Tyler and Erica are killed when they try to escape. Alicia learns from Martia that the entire village is cursed. Vargas Diaz obtained eternal life through the treasure trove in 1862, but at the expense of the rest of the population, which he blew up. The dead now try to take revenge every year on the day of the dead. Alicia discovers an adjoining room in which Vargas Diaz is lying, with the old woman and wife Oleta at his side. She lets the zombies into the hotel, who now attack Vargas and kill him. The curse is defeated and Martia, Vargas' stepdaughter, turns to dust. Joss and Alicia are saved.
criticism
“Jeremy Kasten's 'Horror in the Attic' was a subtle, quirky scary movie that sparked some hope in horror arthouses. This was followed by 'Wizard of Gore', which was also quirky but not quite as subtle anymore. 'All Souls Day' is no longer subtle at all, but lets the trendy 'Wrong Turn' model collide with the no less popular zombie motif with a lot of bloodshed and a bit of humor. It is quite possible that many fans would have preferred something like this from the start. All-round horror action fun with one or the other original approach. "
