Allan Phillip Jaffe (born April 24, 1935 in Pottsville (Pennsylvania) , † March 9, 1987 in New Orleans ) was an American jazz musician ( tuba , band leader) and operator of the Preservation Hall in New Orleans.

Live and act

Jaffe comes from a musical family: his grandfather was a horn player in the Russian imperial army; his father was a mandolin player and teacher. Jaffe learned the piano and cornet before choosing the tuba in high school. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania before serving as a regular in the army.

After his release, Jaffe moved to New Orleans in 1961, where he soon took over the Preservation Hall . In doing so, he played an important role in the revival of the 1960s and in the careers of musicians such as George Lewis , Jim Robinson , Alcide Pavageau , Punch Miller , Chester Zardis , Kid Sheik Cola , Percy Humphrey , Kid Thomas Valentine and Billie Pierce .

Jaffe was also the conductor and tuba player of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band , with whom he recorded several albums, and organized the band's worldwide tours. He can also be heard on recordings by Johnny Wiggs as well as with the New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra and Harold Dejan's Olympia Brass Band of New Orleans .

His son Ben Jaffe plays the double bass and tuba and now performs with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
