Hannes Lücke is a professional copywriter in Frankfurt am Main . At Christmas , like every year, he visits his family in Münster in Westphalia . Here in his hometown his acquaintances, relatives and friends live in middle-class conditions. Also this time he brought a new friend Inge from Frankfurt. He sings Christmas carols with Mrs. Lore and the children and plays an ideal world, although the marriage has long been destroyed; Inge waits impatiently for him in the hotel. She now wants a decision from him and urges him to talk to his wife. His wife, however, wants him back, if only because of the children. Hannes, however, shows himself weak in making decisions; He gives both sides hopes that he ultimately cannot fulfill. He tries himself in the role of the lover, the husband, the worried father; but in none he convinces and every time it gets difficult he runs away. With his clique, he only remembers the past and drowns Christmas in alcohol. One of them reads a poem in the intoxication, which is to be understood like the swan song of the post-war generation: "We have only turned forty, our only medals, has some carnival lover given us, you are right if you think the rest of our dreams, decorate the Christmas trees ... "Then they drive together to the old flak position, where they were used as Hitler Youth for air defense. Münster is only Hannes' past, which he visits in order to forget it. The next morning they both leave Münster again without a decision being made. On the drive to Frankfurt he tells Inge the same lies that he told his wife 13 years ago. It becomes clear that this Christmas was no exception, but comes back every year.
