action

The young woman Maria suffers from borderline syndrome . During the day she works in the university library on the Essen campus of the University of Duisburg-Essen . The lonely woman spends the nights in discos and forks lovers for one-night stands . Then she throws the lovers out of their bed again or flees into even deeper psychological holes. She tries to master herself with strong alcohol and tablets, but this leads to her falling into even more absurd adventures. The only person who knows about her illness is her friend Sarah. Maria longs for a lasting relationship, but she doesn't feel capable of it. The only lasting relationship she has is with Wolfgang, who takes advantage of her illness for his perversities.

In the library, Maria meets the young veterinary student Jan, who is doing an internship at the Wuppertal Zoo . Both are in love and Maria hopes to establish a relationship for the first time, but at the same time fears that such a relationship will be destroyed again by her change of mood. But for the first time she feels something like security. However, Jan is confronted with the mood changes and is confused. He notices that Maria is having problems and tries to track her down. Maria, on the other hand, is afraid to clarify the truth to Jan so as not to lose him. A short vacation by the sea will be one of Maria's most wonderful experiences. When Jan goes on a study expedition to Holland for a week, Maria does not get over the renewed solitude and loneliness and falls again. She contacts Wolfgang again and spends the night with him. After a night of sleep, she is late for work and loses her job, as is so often the case. The friend Sarah takes them in. After returning home, Jan tries to figure out his girlfriend's problems again, but she flees from him. After an accident with a stolen taxi, she wanders through the night. In her favorite place, Jan finds his distraught girlfriend in the morning. Maria is touched because Jan doesn’t give up and seems to be really serious about her.

Reviews

  • Prisma Online: Directing debutant Thomas Durchschlag took a very radical approach to the story and presented Lavinia Wilson in top form. Due to their strong performance, one forgives one or the other staged wobbler. The work received prizes at the Hof Film Festival and in Saarbrücken.
  • filmkritiken.org: Back to the clichés: with the well-behaved, naive friend that Maria finally finds and with the heavy piano music that oozes from the soundtrack while Maria stands in front of the window and empties the vodka bottle like mineral water. This leaves a hardly convincing portrait of a fallen person, an attempted copy of the genre of 'problem films' that have discredited German film, which is so exciting elsewhere.
  • critic.de: Alone is a sensitive film that tells the story in a concentrated manner without unnecessary frills and at the same time is haunting. The film describes situations of a fragile character who is entangled with himself. He lets the viewer oscillate between those feelings of closeness and repulsion that determine the life of the main character.
  • Sascha Westphal, FR : Lavinia Wilson's portrayal transforms Maria from a case study into a living figure that is far more complex than the sum of all of her symptoms of the disease suggests.
  • Michael Althen, FAZ : Lavinia Wilson is a sensation. Sometimes her face is as pointed as Nicole Kidman's, then again as translucently vulnerable as Julianne Moore's, and if it weren't for this film one would have to hope that someone would come and write her stories precisely.
