Allium macrostemon is a species of leek ( Allium ). The plant native to Central and East Asia is used both as a food and medicinally.

description

Allium macrostemon is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 70 cm. This geophyte forms a single onion as a persistence organ, which is almost spherical, has a diameter of 0.7 to 1.5 (rarely up to 2) cm and usually forms secondary bulbs at its base. The onion is surrounded by a blackish, paper-like to membranous shell (tunic).

The 2 to 5 mm wide leaves are shorter than the inflorescence stem. They have a semicircular to triangular cross-section.

The inflorescence stem, which is round in cross section, is covered with leaf sheaths for a quarter to a third of its length. The spathe (high leaf cover) is two-part and durable. The golden inflorescence is hemispherical to spherical and contains many bulbs and / or flowers. The bulbs are 4 to 6 mm long, egg-shaped and sessile. The thread-like flower stalks each sit in the axilla of a bract. The flower stalks are about the same length and three to five times as long as the bracts.

The hermaphroditic, radial symmetry flowers are threefold. The almost identical bracts , standing in two circles, are light purple to light red with a length of 4 to 5.5 and a width of 1.2 to 2 mm, whereby the inner three are usually slightly shorter than the outer. There are two circles with three stamens each. The stamens of the same length are about half as long to almost as long as the bracts. They are triangular at the base and there the inner stamens are half as wide as the outer ones. The almost spherical ovaries have concave nectaries, which are covered at their base with hook-shaped projections. The style towers over the bracts.

The flowering time and also the ripening time of the fruit are between May and July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16, 24, 32, 40 or 48.

Occurrence

Allium macrostemon is found in Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Siberia and all of China except in the provinces of Hainan, Qinghai and Xinjiang. This species usually grows at altitudes from 0 to 1600 meters on hills, slopes, in valleys and in plains, in Xizang and Yunnan it occurs up to 3000 meters. Their varieties are grown in many parts of the world.

Systematics

Allium macrostemon was first described by Alexander von Bunge in 1833 . The species belongs to the section Scorodon in the subgenus Polyprason within the genus Allium .

use

The onions and leaves are eaten raw or cooked. The flowers are eaten raw. You can use it to garnish salad.

The medical effects were examined. The sap is used as a repellent , it is supposed to drive away insects.
