Aloe deltoideodonta is a species of aloes in the subfamily of the Affodilla family (Asphodeloideae). The specific epithet deltoideodonta is derived from the Greek words deltoides for 'delta-shaped' and odontos for 'tooth' and refers to the shape of the peripheral teeth.

description

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe deltoideodonta grows without a stem or with a very short stem, is solitary or forms small clumps. The 12 to 16 upright, lanceolate deltoid leaves form a dense rosette . The greyish green, indistinctly lined leaf blade is 10 to 13 inches long and 2.5 to 3 inches wide. The yellowish teeth on the narrow, yellowish, cartilaginous leaf margin are 2 millimeters long and 3 to 5 millimeters apart.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescence is simple or has one or two branches. It reaches a length of 40 to 60 centimeters. The rather dense, narrowly cylindrical and long, pointed grapes are 15 to 20 centimeters long. The lanceolate-deltoid, white bracts have a length of about 10 millimeters. The red flowers are on 10 to 12 millimeter long peduncles . The flowers are about 25 millimeters long and narrowed at their base. Your tepals are not fused together over a length of 10 millimeters. The stamens and the stylus barely protrude from the flower.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe deltoideodonta is common in Madagascar .

The first description by John Gilbert Baker was published in 1883. The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. deltoideodonta
  • Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. amboahangyensis Rebmann
  • Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. brevifolia (H.Perrier) Rebmann
  • Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. candicans (H.Perrier) Rebmann
  • Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. esomonyensis Rebmann
  • Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. fallax (J.-B.Castillon) Rebmann

Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. deltoideodonta Aloe deltoideodonta var. typica H. Perier (1926, nom. inval. ICBN -Article 24.3)is
a synonym . The type location is not known.

Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. amboahangyensis
Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. amboahangyensis differs from Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. deltoideodonta due to the open to bent back leaves, shorter bracts, longer flower stalks and shorter flowers.

The subspecies is common in the province of Toliara near Ambohimanga on granite at an altitude of 320 meters. The first description by Norbert Rebmann was published in 2009.

Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. brevifolia
The differences to Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. deltoideodonta are: The leaves are 10 inches long and 5 inches wide. The inflorescence becomes 30 centimeters high and the flowers are 22 millimeters long.

The subspecies is distributed on exposed sandstone rocks at heights of about 1000 meters. The first description as Aloe deltoideodonta var. Brevifolia by Henri Perrier de La Bâthie was published in 1926. Norbert Rebmann raised the variety to the rank of subspecies in 2009.

Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. candicans
The differences to Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. deltoideodonta are: The leaves are 15 to 20 centimeters long and 5 to 6 centimeters wide. The cylindrical-conical grapes are 10 to 20 centimeters long. The ovate-pointed, very white bracts have a length of about 15 millimeters and are 7 to 8 millimeters wide. The number of chromosomes is.

The subspecies is common in the province of Fianarantsoa on granite deposits and rocky humps at heights of 660 to 800 meters. The first description as Aloe deltoideodonta var. Candicans by Henri Perrier de La Bâthie was published in 1926. Norbert Rebmann raised the variety to the rank of subspecies in 2009.

Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. esomonyensis
The subspecies is distributed in the province of Toliara at the foot of the Andohahela Mountains near
Esomony at an altitude of 450 meters. The first description by Norbert Rebmann was published in 2009.

Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. fallax
Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. fallax differs from Aloe deltoideodonta subsp. deltoideodonta due to the clearly lined leaves that turn reddish during the dry season.

The subspecies is known with certainty only from the type locality southwest of Ambalavao . The first description as Aloe deltoideodonta var. Fallax by Jean-Bernard Castillon was published in 2006. Norbert Rebmann raised the variety to the rank of subspecies in 2009. However, this recombination is invalid according to the rules of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature , as it did not give a direct reference to the basionym .
