description

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe kaokoensis grows trunk-forming and individually. The initially upright trunks later prostrate and reach a length of up to 100 centimeters. Below the leaf rosette , they are covered with the remains of dead leaves. The lanceolate leaves are initially upright and then spread out. The pale glauke , slightly rough leaf blade is 38 to 67 centimeters long and 4 to 14 centimeters wide. The upper side of the leaf is sparsely spotted with white towards the base. On the underside, the dense spots form transverse bands. The black teeth on the yellow, cartilaginous leaf margin are 3 to 4 millimeters long and 7 to 15 millimeters apart. There are one to three teeth on the tip of the leaf. The yellow leaf sap dries dark brown.

Inflorescences and flowers

The upright inflorescence consists of about 15 branches and reaches a length of 123 to 142 centimeters. The loose, cylindrical-pointed grapes are 33 to 45 centimeters long and 7 centimeters wide. The linear-lanceolate bracts have a length of 10 to 12 millimeters and are 3 millimeters wide. The cylindrical-triangular, orange-red to yellowish flowers are on 11 to 14 millimeter long peduncles . The flowers are 35 millimeters long. At the level of the ovary , the flowers have a diameter of 6 to 6.5 millimeters. Their outer tepals are not fused together over half their length. The stamens and the style stick out briefly from the flower.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe kaokoensis is widespread in the north of Namibia in the Otjihipa Mountains in the Kaokoveld at altitudes of 1000 meters.

The first description by Ernst Jacobus van Jaarsveld , Wessel Swanepoel and Abraham Erasmus Van Wyk was published in 2006.
