Aloe modesta is a species of aloes in the subfamily of the Affodilla family (Asphodeloideae). The specific epithet modesta comes from Latin , means 'modest' and refers to the small size of the plants.

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe modesta grows stemless and simply with a subterranean egg-shaped, onion-like swell 2.5 centimeters long and 2 centimeters wide. The roots are fleshy. The four to six linear-pointed leaves form a rosette . The cloudy, deep green leaf blade is 15 to 20 inches long and 8 to 9 inches wide. The underside of the leaf is covered with numerous cloudy green, lens-shaped spots. Teeth on the leaf margin are not formed.

Inflorescences and flowers

The simple inflorescence reaches a length of 25 to 30 centimeters. The dense, almost capped, slightly conical grapes are 3.5 to 4 inches long and 3 to 3.5 inches wide. The egg-shaped pointed bracts have a length of 10 millimeters and are 6 millimeters wide. The yellowish green flowers are on 1 millimeter long peduncles . They are 13 millimeters long and rounded at their base. At the level of the ovary , the flowers have a diameter of 4 millimeters. They are not narrowed beyond that. Your outer tepals are not fused together. The stamens and the pen stand 4 millimeters out from the flower.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe modesta is common in the South African provinces of Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal in grasslands on stony at altitudes of 1500 to 1800 meters.

The first description by Gilbert Westacott Reynolds was published in 1956.
