Aloe munchii is a species of aloes in the subfamily of the Affodilla family (Asphodeloideae). The specific epithet munchii honors the Zimbabwe-based farmer Raymond C. Munch (1901–1985).

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe munchii grows trunk-forming, is simply or sparsely branched. The upright trunks reach a length of up to 5 meters. The approximately 24 to 30 sword-shaped leaves form a dense rosette . The cloudy gray-green, reddish tinged leaf blade is 50 centimeters long and 6 to 8 centimeters wide. The slightly pink teeth on the cartilaginous, slightly pink leaf margin are 1 to 1.5 millimeters long and 10 to 15 millimeters apart.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescence has two to three branches and reaches a length of 60 centimeters. The dense, conical-headed grapes are 10 to 12 centimeters long and 14 centimeters wide. The egg-shaped, finely tipped bracts are 14 millimeters long and 10 to 12 millimeters wide. The scarlet or orange flowers are on 35 to 40 millimeter long peduncles . They are 45 millimeters long and very short at their base. At the level of the ovary , the flowers have a diameter of 7 to 8 millimeters. Above that, they are slightly widened towards the mouth. Your outer tepals are not fused together. The stamens and the pen stand out 2 to 5 millimeters from the flower.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe munchii is common on the border between Mozambique and Zimbabwe on rock deposits at altitudes of 1525 to 2135 meters.
