Systematics and distribution

Aloe reitzii is common in South Africa.

The first description by Gilbert Westacott Reynolds was published in 1937. A distinction is made between the following varieties :

  • Aloe reitzii var. Reitzii
  • Aloe reitzii var. Vernalis D.S. Hardy

Aloe reitzii var. Reitzii
The variety is common in the South African province of Mpumalanga on rocky slopes at altitudes of 1200 to 1600 meters.

Aloe reitzii var. Vernalis
The differences to Aloe reitzii var. Reitzii are: The leaves of the variety are 40 to 65 centimeters long and 5 to 9 centimeters wide. The inflorescence reaches a length of up to 75 centimeters. The bracts are deltoid tapering and are 6 millimeters long and 5 millimeters wide.

The first description of the variety by David Spencer Hardy was published in 1981. Aloe reitzii var. Vernalis is distributed in South Africa in the province of KwaZulu-Natal between Vryheid and Natal Spa on steep, water-permeable granite slopes.
