Aloe spicata is a species of aloes in the subfamily of the Affodilla family (Asphodeloideae). The specific epithet spicata comes from Latin , means 'with an ear' and refers to the long and densely flowered, ear-like inflorescence of the species.

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe spicata grows trunk-forming, is simple or branching. The trunk reaches a length of up to 2 meters. The approximately 30 lanceolate, narrowed leaves form dense rosettes . The green to reddish leaf blade is about 50 to 60 inches long and 7 to 9 inches wide. The deep pink to reddish teeth on the reddish leaf margin are 1 to 1.5 millimeters long and 8 to 12 millimeters apart.

Inflorescences and flowers

The simple inflorescence reaches a length of up to 100 centimeters or more. The very dense, cylindrical grapes are about 30 to 40 centimeters long and 4 to 5 centimeters wide. The bracts are long, egg-shaped, and there is no flower stalk . The bell-shaped, greenish yellow flowers are 14 to 15 millimeters long. Your outer tepals are not fused together. The stamens and the style stick out 10 millimeters from the flower.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe spicata is widespread in Mozambique , Zimbabwe , the South African provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga, and in Swaziland on granite rock deposits and cliffs up to an altitude of 1700 meters.

The first description by Carl von Linné the Younger was published in 1782.

A synonym is Aloe sessiliflora Pole-Evans (1917).
