Aloe vryheidensis is a species of the genus Aloes in the subfamily of the Affodilla plants (Asphodeloideae). The specific epithet vryheidensis refers to the occurrence of the species near Vryheid in South Africa.

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe vryheidensis grows stemless or in a stem-forming manner, is simply or occasionally two to fourfold branched from the base. The prostrate, almost upright to upright trunks reach a length of up to 2 meters and are 20 centimeters thick. The 20 to 50 lanceolate, narrowed leaves form a dense rosette . The dark green to glauk- green and bluish tinged leaf blade is up to 65 centimeters long and 13 centimeters wide. The leaf surface is smooth. The piercing, reddish to brownish red teeth on the reddish leaf margin are 2 to 3 millimeters long and 10 to 15 millimeters apart. The leaf juice dries yellow.

Inflorescences and flowers

The crooked, simple inflorescence reaches a length of 60 to 150 centimeters. The upright, dense, cylindrical grapes are 30 to 40 inches long and 5 to 7 inches wide. The ovoid-pointed bracts are 8 to 15 millimeters long and 5 to 10 millimeters wide. The bell-shaped, pink or greenish yellow to yellowish flowers are sessile. They are 12 to 20 millimeters long and have an inverted conical base. At the level of the ovary , the flowers have a diameter of 5 millimeters. Above that, they are expanded to 12 millimeters towards the mouth. Your outer tepals are not fused together. The stamens and the pen stand 15 to 17 millimeters out of flowering.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe vryheidensis is common in the South African provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo on exposed rocky slopes at altitudes of 900 to 1800 meters.

The first description by Barend Hermanus Groenewald was published in 1937. Aloe dolomitica Groenew is a synonym . (1938).
