Aloe decumbens is a species of aloes in the subfamily of the Affodillaceae (Asphodeloideae). The specific epithet decumbens comes from Latin , means 'lying down' and refers to the habitus of the species.

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe decumbens grows trunk-forming and branches out from the base. The prostrate trunks are up to 75 centimeters long and 1 centimeter wide. The lanceolate-deltoid, indistinct green striped leaves are scattered along the stems. Your green leaf blade is up to 15 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. The white teeth on the whitish, cartilaginous leaf margin are 0.5 millimeters long. The leaf sheaths have a length of about 10 millimeters.

Inflorescences and flowers

The simple inflorescence becomes about 30 centimeters long. The rather loose grapes are 10 to 12 centimeters long. The pale brown bracts are 4 to 5 millimeters long and 2 to 3 millimeters wide. The cylindrical, scarlet flowers are on 4 to 5 millimeter long peduncles . The flowers are 28 to 33 millimeters long. At the level of the ovary , the flowers are 5 to 6 millimeters in diameter. Your outer tepals are not fused together over a length of 6 millimeters. The stamens and the pen stand 2 to 3 millimeters out from the flower.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe decumbens is common in the Western Cape Province at altitudes of 180 to 365 meters on rocks and cliffs.

The first description as Aloe gracilis var. Decumbens by Gilbert Westacott Reynolds was published in 1950. Ernst Jacobus van Jaarsveld elevated the variety to the rank of a species in 2008.

Aloiampelos decumbens (Reynolds) Klopper & Gideon F.Sm. is a synonym. (2013).
