Alois Oswatitsch (also Alojz Osvatič and from December 16, 1918 Alois Ostwald ; born June 18, 1874 in Gonobitz , † February 23, 1959 in Linz ) was an Austrian academic painter and professor of freehand drawing.

Life

Alois Oswatitsch was born on June 18, 1874 in Gonobitz, then part of Austria-Hungary, in Lower Styria . His birthplace today belongs to Slovenia with the name Slovenske Konjice .

Alois Oswatitsch attended elementary school in Windisch-Feistritz (Slovenska Bistrica) about 15 km away from 1880 . Before 1884 his parents moved with their sons Alois (* 1874), Josef (* 1876) and Max (* 1881) from Gonobitz to the town of Pettau (Ptuj) about 40 km away , where they can be found at Herrengasse 8 ( Prešernova ulica) ran a tailor shop and their children Franziska (* 1884) and Alexander (* 1889) were born.

With the move to Pettau, Alois Oswatitsch also switched to the local elementary school, which he graduated on July 15, 1888 at the age of 14.

A scholarship awarded by the State of Styria enabled 16-year-old Alois Oswatitsch to begin his artistic studies at the Styrian State Drawing Academy in Graz in 1890 and successfully complete it on July 18, 1894. In October 1894, at the age of 20, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna as a student in history painting . He attended there from the winter semester 1894/95 to the summer semester 1898 the "General Painting School" under the direction of Christian Griepenkerl .

After the eight semesters of “General Painting School” under Prof. Griepenkerl, Alois Oswatitsch continued his studies at Schillerplatz at the “Special School for History Painting” with Franz Rumpler in the winter semester of 1898 at the age of 24 . The Ministry of Cultus and Education bought one of his works on the occasion of a school exhibition in 1900; In 1902, on the occasion of another school exhibition, he was referred to as “worthy of recognition”. Alois Oswatitsch finished his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna as an academic painter at the end of the summer semester 1903 at the age of 29. Alois Oswatitsch then went to Marburg (Maribor) and began working as a freelance academic painter there.

From April 1907 to October 1910 Alois Oswatitsch lived in Aflenz an der Sulm , today part of the Wagna community .

On October 22, 1910, Alois Oswatitsch began his professional career as a teacher as an assistant for freehand drawing at what is now the Bundesrealgymnasium Fadingerstraße 4 in Linz . There he received an annual salary of 1,440 kroner for 24 hours a week. His home address in Linz was Aubgerg 21 and then Riesenhofstraße 5.

In order to achieve the goal of a permanent position as a full professor at the State Realschule in Linz, Alois Oswatitsch started his application on February 10, 1911 for the "teaching post for freehand drawing in secondary schools" at his old training facility in Vienna, the Academy of Fine Arts at Schillerplatz and on December 9, 1912, he passed this exam. It was not until five years later, at the age of 43, in November 1917, a year before the end of the First World War , that Alois Oswatitsch was appointed temporary teacher by the substitute teacher.

At the end of the First World War, the Austro-Hungarian multi-ethnic state disintegrated and Alois Oswatitsch became a foreigner in Linz because his place of birth now belonged to Slovenia. Through a declaration to the young Republic of German Austria , citizens could also be granted citizenship who had lived in German Austria since 1914. Persons who at the time of the announcement were entitled to reside in a municipality of the collapsed Austrian monarchy that was outside the German-Austrian Republic also had the right to declare themselves as German-Austrians to the authorities. Alois Oswatitsch made use of this and changed his Slavic family name "Oswatitsch" to "Ostwald" with effect from December 16, 1918. Allegedly, even after his name change, he continued to sign pictures with “A. Oswatitsch ".

With the decree of the state school board in Austria above the Enns in Linz on October 5, 1919, the transfer from the home community of his father Smolinzen , which was formerly responsible for Alois Ostwald , now also belongs to "Southern Slavia", to Linz. Alois Ostwald became a citizen of the new Republic of German-Austria through the change of home jurisdiction. With effect from October 1, 1919, he was also appointed full professor with a permanent position at the grammar school by the provisional teacher.

During the Second World War , Alois Ostwald married on May 26, 1942 at the registry office in Linz Maria Herzig, who had been with him for decades and came from Bergen (today: Perná , Czech Republic), Nikolsburg district in South Moravia . Both were 68 years old at this point in time.

Professor Alois Ostwald died on February 23, 1959 at the age of 85 in Linz and was buried in the cemetery in Linz-Urfahr.
