Alois Seiler (historian, 1909)

Alois Seiler (born March 7, 1909 in Horchheim near Worms , † October 7, 1997 in Wiesbaden ) was a German historian and educator .

Life

Alois Seiler studied history, German and English from 1928 to 1932 at the universities of Giessen , Innsbruck and Munich . From 1932 he was a trainee teacher at the Realgymnasium Gießen and the Gymnasium Mainz . 1934 doctorate in Giessen with Theodor Mayer with a dissertation on the Worms Monastery in the Middle Ages . From 1934 to 1938 he taught as Studienassessor at Catholic private schools in Mainz , first at Progymnasium Theresienheim of John missionaries and thereafter until closing 1938 at the Episcopal St.Marienschule . Subsequently, he was a teacher at state schools in Bad Nauheim and Bad Wimpfen until 1939 and a teacher at the private Hermann Lietz School in Haubinda from 1939 to 1941 . In 1941 Seiler was called up for military service. After the end of the war he was a teacher at the grammar school in Worms from 1945 to 1947 . In 1947 he was a founding member of the Society for Middle Rhine Church History . In the same year he was appointed as a lecturer for history and social studies at the Pedagogical Institute in Weilburg / Lahn . In 1961 he was appointed associate professor. From 1961 to 1963 he was an advisor to the central government of the Federal Republic of Congo in Léopoldville on behalf of UNESCO as an expert on teacher training and elementary school issues . At the end of 1963, the Weilburg Pedagogical Institute was relocated to Gießen and renamed the University of Education (HfE). From 1964, Seiler held the temporary chair for didactics of social studies at the HfE Gießen . From 1966 until his retirement in 1973 he was a lecturer for history didactics and social studies at the HfE Gießen.

The literary scholar and journalist Almut Seiler-Dietrich is his daughter.

Fonts

In addition to a small number of contributions to regional history, Seiler has mainly published essays on the pedagogy and didactics of history and social studies lessons. In 1960, Seiler published a documentation about the Nazi dictatorship that was prepared for school lessons under the title Uncomfortable Past . This book had five editions in the same year. The 6th edition was a new edition with the changed title Zeitgeschichte und wir , which was reprinted several times until 1967. In 1972, Seiler finally published a chronologically extended documentary History of Our Time. Reports, documents, pictures, 1917 – present .
