Luigi (Aloysius) Barlassina (born April 30, 1872 in Turin , Italy , † September 27, 1947 ) was Patriarch of Jerusalem .

Life

Barlassina was ordained a priest on December 22, 1894 and received a doctorate in theology and canon law. In 1911 he was spiritual at the College of Propaganda Fide in Rome and from 1912 to 1918 Vicario Curato at the Lateran Basilica. Pope Benedict XV appointed him titular bishop of Capharnaum in 1918 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in Jerusalem. The episcopal ordination received his Basilio Cardinal Pompili on September 8, 1918 in Rome; Co- consecrators were Pietro Alfonso Jorio (Iorio), Archbishop Emeritus of Taranto , and Americo Bevilacqua , Bishop Emeritus of Alatri . 1919 Apostolic Administrator of Jerusalem, he was appointed in 1920 by Pope Pius XI. appointed Patriarch of Jerusalem , the only Latin Patriarch in the East .

In 1927 Luigi Barlassina founded the Deir Rafat monastery and the place of pilgrimage in honor of Mary, Queen of Palestine.

From 1928 until his death in 1947 he was also rector and permanent administrator of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem (although not Grand Master).
