Vegetative characteristics

The alpine sun rose is an evergreen, richly branched, densely or loosely-grassed dwarf shrub that reaches heights of 3 to 15 centimeters. The upper parts of the plant are covered with simple hair . The branches are ascending and tomentose. Non-flowering shoots usually end with leaf rosettes.

The opposite leaves are stalked or sessile. With a length of 5 to 15 millimeters and a width of 2 to 5 millimeters, the simple leaf blade is oval to narrow-lanceolate , flat on the edge, green and curly haired on both sides or glabrous and narrowed at the base. At least the lower leaves have no stipules .

Generative characteristics

The flowering period is from May to August. Six to seven flowers are located in an inflorescence on an elongated inflorescence axis. The flower buds are egg-shaped.

The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The inner sepals are larger and 5 to 7 millimeters long. The five free petals are 7 to 10 millimeters long, yellow and not spotted at the base. There are many stamens present.

The fruit stalks are upright, horizontal or turned back.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence

The alpine sun rose grows on fresh, lime-rich alpine mats , in crevices and on river gravel at altitudes of up to 2450 meters. In the Allgäu Alps, it rises in the Tyrolean part of the Klimmspitze to an altitude of 2400 meters. In Central Europe it is a character species of the association Seslerion albicantis. It occurs in warm temperate to temperate Europe and the Middle East.

use

The alpine sun rose is used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens and dry stone walls.
