Alphonse Joseph Matthijsen MAfr (born November 28, 1890 in Hoogboom-Eeckeren , Belgium , † August 19, 1963 ) was a Belgian religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Bunia .

Life

Alphonse Joseph Matthijsen joined the religious order of the White Fathers in and received on 8 September 1915, the sacrament of Holy Orders . On June 21, 1922, Pope Pius XI appointed him . as the first Apostolic Prefect of Lac Albert.

On December 11, 1933, Alphonse Joseph Matthijsen became the first Vicar Apostolic of Lac Albert and Pius XI as a result of the elevation of the Apostolic Prefecture Lac Albert to the Apostolic Vicariate . appointed him titular bishop of Berenice . The Archbishop of Mechelen , Cardinal Jozef-Ernest Van Roey , donated him episcopal ordination on February 25, 1934 ; Co- consecrators were the auxiliary bishop in Mechelen, Jean Marie Van Cauwenbergh , and the bishop of Ghent , Honoré-Jozef Coppieters .

Alphonse Joseph Matthijsen became the first bishop of Bunia on November 10, 1959 as a result of the elevation of the Apostolic Vicariate Lac Albert to the diocese . Matthijsen attended the first session of the Second Vatican Council .
