Alphonsus Mathias

Alphonsus Mathias (born June 22, 1928 in Pangala ) is senior archbishop of Bangalore and participant in the last two sessions of the Second Vatican Council .

Life

Alphonsus Mathias was ordained a priest on August 24, 1954 . Paul VI appointed him on November 16, 1963 first bishop of Chikmagalur .

The Apostolic Internuncio in India , James Robert Knox , consecrated him on February 5, 1964 as bishop ; Co- consecrators were Albert Vincent D'Souza , Archbishop of Calcutta and Raymond D'Mello , Bishop of Allahabad .

On September 12, 1986, he was appointed Archbishop of Bangalore . On March 24, 1998, he resigned from office.
