Alsea River near Salmonberry County Park |
The Alsea River is a 78 km long river on the Pacific coast in western Oregon ( USA ).
The sometimes very meandering river has its source in the Oregon Coast Range and arises from the confluence of its two headwaters - North Fork and South Fork Alsea River - in northwest Lane County . The North Fork entfließt the 9 km southwest of the 1,249 m high Marys Peak located Klickitat Lake ( 355 m above sea level), which is fed by two source streams. From there it flows to the southeast. The South Fork rises about 34 km northwest of Eugene just a little northeast of the small settlement Horton and flows from there to the northwest. Even before its river wedding, which is roughly in the middle of the two headwaters of the north and south arm, the Alsea River flows through a low mountain range in the counties of Benton County and Lincoln County . After flowing through its river bed, which runs mainly in a westerly direction, its water flows into the approximately two by three kilometer large Alsea Bay at Waldport .
The name of the river comes from the Alsea tribe of the First Nations , also called Alsi or Alseya, who settled on the lower reaches and at the mouth of the river. The upper reaches of the river is an important spawning area, to which there are three fish migrations during the year :
- in late summer that of the cutthroat trout ,
- from late summer to November that of king salmon ,
- and from December to March that of the rainbow trout .
Almost along the entire course of the river - below the confluence of its headwaters - the Alsea River is accompanied by Oregon State Route 34 . The river and the landscape through which its water flows are popular as a recreational area, among other things because of its small waterfalls and its abundance of fish, as well as its mostly steep and densely forested banks .
The main tributaries are Lobster Creek , Fall Creek, and Drift Creek . The catchment area of the river is largely part of the Siuslaw National Forest and covers over 1200 km². In 1890, the highest water level was measured during floods at nine meters .
