Altdorf is a district of the Upper Swabian community of Biessenhofen in the Ostallgäu district in Bavaria .

location

The church village borders Biessenhofen to the south and is located in the Wertach Valley to the right of the Wertach a little north of the intersection of federal highways 12 and 16 . The course of both streets in the local area was redrawn in 1974 and 1978.

history

The name Altdorf indicates that it was an old settlement, Urmark and Urpfarrei and a starting point for other settlements in the area, including probably Marktoberdorf , which was called the "old village" by the expansion settlements. The place is on the Roman road Kempten-Epfach . The mill is believed to have been owned by the Kempten Monastery since the ninth century ; a deed of gift interpreted accordingly by King Heinrich the First dates to the year 929. Other possessions in the area are 1150 for the Ursberg monastery , 1303 for the Tyrolean Stams monastery and 1501 proven for the Kaufbeurer Spital .

The Benzenauer from Kemnat founded a village court in the 15th century and held a blood spell and high jurisdiction. As a symbol of the “Altdorf Court”, there is still a linden tree in the “Galgenacker” corridor, where the high court of that time took place with stick and gallows. In 1545 the Kemnater Simprecht von Benzenau sold Altdorf, Kreen, Hörmanshofen, Biessenhofen and Otilienberg to Peter von Gaisberg . In 1610, rule fell to the bishopric of Augsburg over the barons of Stotzingen .

In 1529 about 30 houses in Altdorf are occupied, a village school can be traced back to 1586.

Guggenried and Auleich are abandoned settlements in the vicinity. Guggenried is mentioned in a 1394 Giltbuch of the Kempten monastery. Auleich was deserted during the Thirty Years War and is still traceable as a field name east of Altdorf an der Straße to Bernbach.

On December 23, 1976, the former municipality of Altdorf was renamed the municipality of Biessenhofen .

The nave, choir and crypt of the parish church of the village date from the 15th century, but go back to Romanesque or pre-Romanesque predecessor buildings. The saddle tower dates back to the 13th century and was raised in 1612. In 1684 the sacristy and the roof of the nave were renewed with a grain floor and a paneled ceiling was installed in the nave, which was replaced by a stucco ceiling in 1748. The cemetery that was rounded off around the church still had the remains of a fortification in the 19th century. Three of the original four defense towers were demolished in 1711. A Romanesque lion attached to the sign of the church today was attached to an old forge on the south-east side of the cemetery until 1936, which also served as a prison in the 16th century.

The two-storey parsonage was designed by Johann Georg Fischer , and the stucco work on the upper floor was preserved from the time it was built and attributed to Johann Jakob Herkomer .

Loreto Chapel

Loreto Chapel near Altdorf

In 1628 Kaspar von Hohenberg , carer on the Ottilienberg near Hörmanshofen, had a Loreto chapel with a sacristan's house built at the top of a steep mountain range south of Altdorf . The consecration took place on October 16, 1631 by the Augsburg auxiliary bishop Sebastian Müller. Immediately to the west of the chapel, a plague cemetery was soon built, of which only a few traces of the wall can be seen in the ground today.

From 1664 to 1799 the sacristan's house was inhabited by a clergyman.
