Schwerin has been the main location for the Mecklenburg Army since the 17th century. In 1837 the dukes of Ludwigslust returned to Schwerin and the expansion of Schwerin into a residential and garrison town began.

Several former military buildings were built in Schwerin for the Mecklenburg military :

The 1st, 3rd and 4th batteries of the 1st (Grand Ducal Mecklenburg) division of the Holstein field artillery regiment No. 24 were stationed in Schwerin . The soldiers stayed in private quarters until the barracks were built. That is why the two-storey, 26-axis, clinkered and historicizing old artillery barracks was built in the neo-Renaissance style from 1861/62 according to plans by the military architect Ludwig Wachenhusen (1818–1889). The three-wing system in U-shape like a fort forms an open square and includes the remains of the riding hall. The main building has a representative three-storey middle section and large corner towers as well as two 2- and 3-storey, 20- axis side wings with massive middle and corner risers . The facades were decorated with a variety of shaped stones and terracotta elements. The officers and their families lived in the corner towers. The kitchen, dining rooms, laundry magazine , laundry room, rolling chamber and ancillary rooms were in the vaulted basement. The drying floors were in the attic spaces and there were other makeshift dormitories during the maneuvers.

A fourth single-storey west wing with work rooms, stables, storage rooms, etc. surrounds the facility. Up to 100 horses, wagons and guns were housed here.

The facility was used for military purposes until 1989, initially by the grand ducal military, from 1919 by the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany, from 1945 by the Red Army of the Soviet Union and then the National People's Army of the GDR.

Conversion and renovation took place in construction phases from 2000 to 2019 for the Schwerin tax office according to plans by Rimpel Leifels Architects (Schwerin).

Riding arena

The brick outer walls of the former single-storey, 10.6 × 40 meter indoor riding arena with 3- yoke cross cap vaults have been preserved. They enclose a modern, slightly higher, glazed cube (the planners: "box pushed in"). The new smooth two-part cornice stands out clearly from the old walls and columns. In 2012, the project received recognition at the MV Landesbaupreis for the successful juxtaposition of old and new. The storeroom of the Archaeological State Museum in Schwerin is now housed here.

Application for world heritage

The lines of sight between the barracks, the castle and the old garden were essential for the selection of the building site. The monumental three-wing complex with its facade forms the background for the palace garden. The barracks are therefore 2020 with the Schwerin Castle part of the World Heritage application of the city as a residence ensemble Schwerin - cultural landscape of the romantic historicism and is on the list of the Federal Republic of Germany to apply as a World Heritage Site of UNESCO .

coat of arms

Above the main portal is the coat of arms of the regiment consisting of the Mecklenburg coat of arms framed by a bull and a griffin. Each field symbolizes a major part of the Mecklenburg state: the Duchy of Mecklenburg (bull's head with outstretched red tongue), the principalities (former dioceses) Schwerin (Greif and green square) and Ratzeburg (cross with crown), the county of Schwerin (red and gold center shield ) as well as the lords of Rostock (griffin and front claw), Werle (bull's head) and Stargard (arm with ring). Three flags, five bayonets, the crown and a cannon complete the coat of arms.
