Old Sollner Church of St. Johann Baptist

The old Sollner Church of St. Johann Baptist is the former Catholic Church of Solln , which is now a district of Munich . It is one of the oldest church buildings in and around Munich. From 1905 the newly built church of the same name, St. Johann Baptist on Fellererplatz, took over its function.

location

The church is located in the center of Solln at Herterichstraße 54, corner of Bleibtreustraße. The location is on the northern edge of the listed historic village center of Solln. The church is on a hill next to the road and is surrounded by a former cemetery.

history

The existence of a church in Solln is attested since 1315. But there are indications that there was a branch church of the parish Thalkirchen-Sendling there at least since the 12th century. The current church building was erected in the last quarter of the 15th century. After the Thirty Years War , which the church survived unscathed despite the destruction of Solln, renovations and extensions took place in the 17th and early 18th centuries.

In 1874, Solln and Pullach were separated from the Thalkirchen-Sendling parish and a new Pullach-Solln parish was established with its seat in Pullach.

As early as 1879, the cemetery around the church had become too small and a new cemetery was created on Friedhofweg. With the increase in the population in Solln at the end of the 19th century, especially after the construction of the villa colony Solln and its growth to the southwest, the church with its approximately 80 seats finally became too small, which ultimately led to the construction of the new church on Fellererplatz. In 1920 Solln became an independent parish.

In 1966 the church was extensively renovated and restored.

The old Sollner church is used today by the parish of St. Johann Baptist Solln as a side church, especially in the summer months.

Building

The oldest parts of the church from the late 15th century are the late Gothic chancel and the square lower part of the tower. The nave and the octagonal upper part of the tower with a pointed helmet roof were probably rebuilt during the renovations and extensions between 1640 and 1648, but could also be of older origin.

Furnishing

The rococo - high altar dates from 1760. The altarpiece is from Balthasar Augustin Albrecht and shows John the Baptist , St. George , Conrad of Constance , Maria , whose parents Anna and Joachim , the baby Jesus , the holy Barbara and Elizabeth of Hungary . The carving of the altar is by Johann Baptist Straub . The altar was originally a house altar of the Munich merchant couple Konrad Georg Sauer and Maria Anna Sauer, some of the saints depicted are named patrons of these original owners. The altar was purchased for the Sollner church between 1830 and 1840.

The formerly rich baroque furnishings of the church have been significantly reduced since the 1950s. Two late Gothic carved figures from the early 16th century, a mercy seat and a rosary Madonna, are now in the new church on Fellererplatz. The carved figure of St. Sebastian (circa 1510) has been preserved on the former left side altar, a Black Madonna (circa 1730), which is a copy of the Black Madonna of Einsiedeln , and a carved figure of Saint John the Evangelist (circa 1685) on the former right side altar .
