The old district court is a building in Darmstadt . It is the seat of the Darmstadt Regional Court . Since the capacity was no longer sufficient, it is now building A of the regional court. The new buildings B and C are adjacent.

Architecture and history

The old regional court was built between 1872 and 1874 according to plans by the architects Stephan Braden and Eduard Köhler. It forms the northern end of Mathildenplatz . The three-storey, late classicist building contains 15 axes in the main front. The advanced three-axis central projection has an entrance in each axis. The vertical is additionally emphasized by contracted, three-axis, indicated corner projections . The ground floor , the pilaster strips , the window frames and the cornice are made of red sandstone . The flat sloping slate roof rests on the cornice .

In an air raid in 1944 , the structure was largely destroyed and in the post-war period , most of its parts were faithfully rebuilt. However, the attic was lost during the reconstruction due to the added storey.

In the stairwell there is a sgraffito on the subject of Justicia from the 1950s by Eberhard Schlotter . There are two vases in wall niches above the sgraffito .

Monument protection

For architectural and city history reasons, the building is a cultural monument .
