The old mausoleum is a building in the Rosenhöhe Park in Darmstadt . It belongs to the group of burial sites belonging to the House of Hesse in this park .
history
The old mausoleum was built in 1826 according to plans by court architect Georg Moller in the style of a small Greek temple. This building was built for Princess Elisabeth (1821–1826), whose mother Grand Duchess Wilhelmine Luise had designated the park as the burial place of her daughter, who died of scarlet fever. When the Grand Duchess died in 1836, she was also buried here.
In the years 1869/70 the mausoleum was expanded according to plans by the Darmstadt architect Heinrich Wagner , who added two symmetrical side wings to the original building. In 1878 Grand Duchess Alice and Princess Marie , the mother and a sister of the last Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, were buried in the northern burial chapel .
Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig had the New Mausoleum built in Rosenhöhe Park from 1905 to 1910 . After its completion, the coffins of all grand dukes and their family members were transferred from the princely crypt of the Darmstadt city church to the Rosenhöhe and a new installation was carried out. Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig had his parents and siblings reburied in the New Mausoleum, and the coffins of the former rulers of the Grand Duchy and their family members were brought to the Old Mausoleum. The coffins of the landgraves and their family members remained in the princely crypt of the city church.

Building
The old mausoleum is built in the classical style. The structure is a three-part, symmetrical system.
The central building of the mausoleum, which goes back to court architect Georg Moller , was built in the form of a simple cemetery chapel in the Greek style with a triangular gable and columned portal . Under the gable it bears the inscription "IN SPEM AETERNI CONSORTII" (In the hope of eternal fellowship). Behind the strict classical facade of the central building there is a square chancel and a domed round room with the marble coffin of Princess Elisabeth. The life-size reclining figure by Christian Daniel Rauch (completed in 1831) depicts the princess asleep.
When the mausoleum was rebuilt in 1869/70, the central building was expanded to include symmetrical wings with lateral grave chapels, which were attached to both sides and connected to the central section via colonnades. These components were adapted in style to Moller's architecture .
From 1878 to 1910, Grand Duchess Alice and her daughter Princess Marie, who died prematurely, were buried in the northern burial chapel . Prince Alexander , the founder of the Battenberg family , was also buried here from 1888 to 1894 - next to his mother and sister - but his coffin was then transferred to a new mausoleum in the Kreuzgarten on the Heiligenberg near Jugenheim . Today Prince Emil rests in the northern burial chapel .
The brothers of Grand Duke Ludwig IV , Princes Wilhelm and Heinrich, rest in the southern burial chapel .
