history
The New Mausoleum, not far from the Old Mausoleum , had Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig built as a burial place for his parents. The mausoleum , designed in the neo-Romanesque style, was built between 1905 and 1910 according to plans by the architect Professor Karl Hofmann . After its completion, the coffins of all grand dukes and their family members were transferred from the princely crypt of the Darmstadt city church to the Rosenhöhe and a new installation was carried out. Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig had his parents and siblings reburied in the New Mausoleum, and the coffins of the former rulers of the Grand Duchy and their family members were brought to the Old Mausoleum. The coffins of the landgraves and their family members remained in the princely crypt of the city church.
architecture
Hofmann based his planning on the mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna . He designed the New Mausoleum with a cruciform floor plan and a tower in the center. The sloping roofs are covered with monk-and-nun tiles - following the southern example . The remarkable details of the structure include:
- the typical Romanesque round arches in the facade
- with biblical motifs ornate bronze - Gate
- the cross on the spire, reminiscent of a Russian icon
