Old town tour (Bremerhaven)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The old town tour is a circular route that runs through the Wilhelminian-style district of Bremerhaven 's Lehe district .

history

Leher house and apartment owners joined forces in 2009 to form the Lehe owners' association (ESG Lehe). A year later the idea came up to upgrade Lehe and especially the district around Goethestrasse . This is how the old town tour ("GEHschichten") came about in cooperation with the Bremerhaven town planning office and funding from various sources of money.

"History" of a district

A walk through the old town - hence “GEHschichte” - was equipped with boards with explanations and background information. The information boards are to be supplemented and the lighting improved.

Information boards

The first board stands next to the bus stop on Ernst-Reuter -Platz and welcomes visitors who are on their way.

"Theo"

In front of the former Theodor Storm School there is an information board that indicates the changed school landscape. It is no longer needed as a school; the children have been going to the Astrid Lindgren School at the other end of the street since 2005 . The beautiful and memorable building should be kept open to the public. That is why it was expanded as a center for the Goethe-Quartier with offers from day nurseries , advice for start-ups , debtors and rooms for restaurants and events. During the renovation, old elements were preserved, e.g. B. Ornate banisters and window ornaments . The former auditorium chandelier shines again. In the former gymnasium, companies can dine. And various events - including concerts - and conferences can take place in the former music hall. The socio-cultural center was financed with funds from urban redevelopment and with grants from the EU .

Aue

Former course of the floodplain through the Goethe quarter

Until 1971, water came from the north and flowed through the neighborhood. The floodplain crossed Potsdamer Strasse at the point where the plaque is now set up. At low tide the floodplain flowed into the Geeste - a few hundred meters further. At high tide , gates shut the mouth of the floodplain. With the expansion of the sewer system , the river lost its function, and because not so much water flowed, the floodplain was filled in.

Leher schoolyard

In Eupen road has an information panel on the former use of the square towards: By 2005, stood on the court the dike school. The elementary school was closed and demolished due to the drastic drop in student numbers. In 2007 the “Leher Pausenhof” was set up as a play and open space between the narrow buildings.

Goethestrasse / history of crooked houses

A number of houses in the Goethestrasse quarter are “in trouble”. Due to the short construction times and inadequate foundations on piles , the houses tilted and sagged differently in the subsoil. Windows, doors and inventory were adjusted to the incline of the houses so that they remained habitable.

History of the corner bars

At the corner of Goethestrasse and Heinrichstrasse, reference is made to the numerous corner pubs in the district, where Leh life pulsed earlier and the conditions in the port, in the shipyards, in the sea and in numerous craft businesses. For many people they were like a living room because large families with many children lived in small apartments. The common people met in the taverns called " pubs ". Engineers, captains and officials, on the other hand, were among themselves in restaurants. In the corner bars there were also people who were only temporarily in Lehe: emigrants , temporary workers and migrant workers . Most of them lived as sublet and in the evenings they also took refuge in the pubs. After 1945, with the Americans in Bremerhaven, clubs and bars as well as music came to the pubs. The Chicos Place jazz club was particularly well known.

Listed facades in Heinrichstrasse

Listed, richly decorated and detailed facades are located on buildings in Heinrichstrasse - originated as the workers' houses in Hafenstrasse . In the early days of the company they were located on the premises of companies in the construction industry, which demonstrated their skills. Names also come from this - Kistnerstraße is named after a sand-lime brick manufacturer at the time . "The interplay of eaves and gables in combination with a variety of details allow the viewer to make new discoveries."
