Alturas is the county seat of Modoc County in the northern state of California . In 2010 the city had about 2,800 inhabitants.

Alturas is on the banks of the Pit River . The city has an area of ​​5.7 km². The geographical coordinates are 41 ° 29 '  N , 120 ° 33'  W .

history

The area was originally referred to as the Dorris Bridge . It owes this name to Presley Dorris, who built a bridge over the Pit River here. It was not given its current name until 1876. In 1901 it was officially granted town charter.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the 2827 inhabitants were distributed over 1238 households. The population density was 496 inh. / Km². 86% described themselves as white , 0.5% as African-American , 2.9% as Indians , 1.6% as Asian Americans , 4.2% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 4.6% to several ethnic groups. 12.3% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 27% of all households lived in 31.6% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 60.8% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.27 people and the average family size was 2.85 people.

27.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 22.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 22.1% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 39.9 years. 48.1% of the population were male and 51.9% were female.

The median income per household was 2,017 at 32,411 US dollars . 19% of the population lived below the poverty line.
