Alv Kjøs (born June 4, 1894 in Løten , Hedmark ; † April 14, 1990 ) was a Norwegian officer and politician of the conservative Høyre and between 1954 and 1962 its chairman.

Life

Farmer, officer and parliamentarian

After attending school, Kjøs worked as a farmer and attended war school in 1917, after which he became an officer . In addition to his work as a farmer, he continued to work as an officer and was promoted to captain and company commander in 1934.

In 1937 he was elected for the first time as a candidate for the Høyre as a member of the Storting and represented the province ( Fylke ) Hedmark in this until 1965 .

During the Second World War , before the occupation of Norway by the German Wehrmacht in 1940, he was promoted to major and served as chief of a field battalion in southern Norway and as a commander in Harstad .

During his long membership in parliament, Kjøs was from December 1945 to January 1950 Vice-Chairman of the Storting Committee for Agriculture.

After the end of the war, he was promoted to colonel and appointed commander of infantry regiment No. 5 in East Oppland in 1946 . He held this command until 1954.

In addition, he became chairman of the Storting Military Committee in January 1950 and held this position until January 1958. In 1953, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of St. Olav for his many years of military and political services .

Party leader and president of the Odelsting

In 1954 he succeeded Carl Joachim Hambro as chairman of the conservative Høyre and held this office for eight years until he was replaced by Sjur Lindebrække in 1962. At the same time he was from January 1954 to January 1958 vice-chairman of the fraction of Høyre im Storting. During this time he was also from October to December 1954 and between January and April 1955 President Pro tempore des Odelsting , the larger Chamber of Storting.

Between January 1958 and September 1961 he was both president of the Odelsting and vice-chairman of the Storting's electoral committee. He was also chairman of the Høyre faction in Storting between January and October 1958.

Most recently, Kjøs was Vice President of Storting from October 1961 to September 1965, and in 1964 he was appointed Commander with a Star of the Order of St. Olav.
