Amager Strandpark (also Amager Strand ) is a protected local recreation area on the east coast of the Danish island of Amager . The approximately 60- hectare park on Öresund is the closest beach to the center of the metropolis, about five kilometers from Copenhagen's Rådhuspladsen . The site consists of an artificial island in front of it, which was completed in 2005. With a 4.6 km long beach around the island, the park has the largest beach in the Danish capital.

Amager Strandpark is owned by the Københavns Kommune and Frederiksberg Kommune , which together with the former Københavns Amt founded the operating company Amager Strandpark I / S in 2003 .

Park design

While the northern part of the island resembles a dune landscape, a park has been created in the south with a promenade leading to a small guest harbor on the southern tip. The island is separated from the mainland by a canal and an artificial lagoon with shallower water, over which three bridges lead. Along the Amager Strandvej road on the mainland, there is another almost 1.5 km long stretch of beach, the two parks Tiøren and Femøren , which is often a venue for rock concerts in summer. Strandpark is connected to the underground network of the Copenhagen Metro via three stops on the M2 ( Öresund , Amager Strand and Femøren ) .

history

The east coast of Amager originally consisted of a marshland, through which the Danish military laid a path, today's Amager Strandvej , in 1780 . In 1915 the seaside resort Helgoland was built in the north . Over time, a marina and bathing bridges were added, and gardening and fishing associations were founded. In order to further develop the coast as a recreational area, the section between Øresundsvej in the north and Kastrup Fort in the south was created as a beach in 1934 . The tidal current led the sand back into the Öresund again and again , so that by 1948 around 95,000 m 3 of sand had to be washed up on the coast. After that, a sheet pile wall was used for coastal protection until 1962, along with additional sand pre-wash . But even she could not prevent the erosion, so that in the course of time calls for a new beach became louder and louder. First plans from the 1980s finally ended with the groundbreaking in May 2004, and after around 15 months of construction, the new beach was inaugurated on August 18, 2005 by the Danish Crown Prince couple Mary and Frederik . In the course of the work, the old Helgoland bathing establishment was demolished and replaced by a new one. The construction costs amounted to around 200 million Danish kroner .
