Åmål [ oːmoːl ] is a town in Dalsland, Sweden . The main town of the municipality of the same name in the province of Västra Götalands län is located on the west bank of Lake Vänern about 70 kilometers southwest of Karlstad and 180 km north of Gothenburg on European route 45 .
The city is the location of the internationally successful film Fucking Åmål (German Raus aus Åmål ), which was shot in Trollhättan .
history
Åmål was founded in 1640 at a strategic location near the Swedish- Norwegian border and three years later it received town charter. In the following decades the city was sacked twice by troops.
An economic boom followed in the 18th century, and when the town was connected to the Vänerbanan at the end of the 19th century and railway workshops were relocated to Åmål, its industrial boom began, which was expressed in a strong population growth at the beginning of the 20th century.
Åmål Church , built in 1806, replaced the town's old church from the 17th century.
Cityscape
Åmål was largely destroyed by fire in 1901. Therefore, most of the development dates from the 20th century, with the exception of the small district of Plantaget on the east bank of the Åmålsån river , whose wooden houses date from the beginning of the 18th century and are partially protected as cultural monuments.
economy
Today Åmål is an industrial city with mainly machine and car industries (supply industry). The railway workshops that initiated industrialization are also still in the city. Three industrial history and technical museums describe Åmål's industrial development. Tourism also plays a role due to the Vänerhafen and the lake-rich hinterland.
Culture
Since 1992 Åmål has been hosting the 4-day Åmål's Blues Fest at the beginning of July, which attracts international blues musicians. The Amal's Blues Festival is supported by the Amal's Blues Förening organized. Many musicians perform for free at a variety of venues in Åmål during the day. Only evening performances are usually chargeable.
