Ammer Gorge
The Ammerschlucht , also called Ammerleite , is a gorge in the middle reaches of the Ammer in Bavaria .
Location and course
The gorge is located in the Ammer-Loisach hill country , part of the Subalpine Jungmoränenland , in the south of the Bavarian Alpine Foreland north of the Ammergau Alps in the districts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Weilheim-Schongau .
It begins around river kilometer 169 with the Scheibum rock breakthrough west of Saulgrub and initially runs around twelve kilometers (as the crow flies) north to Peiting . There it bends and runs south of the Hohen Peißenberg about six kilometers east to Peißenberg (river kilometer 143), from where the Ammer continues to flow through a plain.
Emergence
Years ago, about 120,000, while that between the Riss glaciation and Würm glaciation lying Eemian , changed the Ammer, previously on the Ettaler Saddle east to Loisach flowed, its course to the north. In doing so, it cut into the moraines of previous glacial periods north of the Ammergau Alps and the subalpine molasses below , creating the Ammer Gorge.

Essentially, the Ammer Gorge is only shaped by rocks at its beginning on the Scheibum . In its further course the steep slopes of the gorge are predominantly forested, in parts mainly with spruce , in other sections also with sycamore maple , mountain elm , ash , fir and yew trees .
The valley floor in the northward section is so narrow that the Ammer has practically no freedom of movement there. Only in a few places there are gravel banks on the edge or in the middle of the river. In the eastward section, the valley floor is somewhat wider. There are wider gravel banks and meadows here, and the bunting has more freedom of movement. At the Obere Au district of Peißenberg, the valley widens into the plain.

tourism
Through the section of the gorge leading to the north there are no hiking trails apart from a few passages (e.g. a section of the Via Romea ). In the east-west running section lies a section of the pre-alpine Jakobsweg coming from Salzburg , which meets the Jakobsweg Munich-Lindau here. The Ammer-Amper cycle path also leads through this section of the gorge .
The Ammer Gorge is a popular kayak and canoe route . The section between Scheibum and Rottenbuch (length approx. 12 km, difference in altitude approx. 107 m) is a moderately difficult white water route with cataracts, steps and surges, the section between Rottenbuch and Peißenberg (length approx. 14 km, altitude difference approx. 94 m) is also an easy one route suitable for beginners. Driving is permitted from May 1st to October 15th, but only from a discharge value of at least 6 m³ / s at the Peißenberg gauge. Landing and entering the banks, islands and gravel banks is not permitted except for certain specially designated areas.
