The Dutch Philharmonic Orchestra ( Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest ; abbreviated NedPhO ) is a leading Dutch symphony orchestra . It was founded in 1985 in Amsterdam .
Together with the Dutch Chamber Orchestra Nederlands Kamerorkest (NKO), the Dutch Philharmonic is part of the “ Stichting Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest ” foundation . Until 2012, the orchestra and its administration were located in the Beurs van Berlage building in Amsterdam. The two concert halls in the historic stock exchange building were built for the orchestra after the orchestra was founded on the initiative of the first director Jan Willem Loot and the chief conductor Hartmut Haenchen . The foundation has been based in the Gerardus Majellakerk in Amsterdam since 2012 , where the Dutch Philharmonic and the Dutch Chamber Orchestra also rehearse. With 130 permanent musicians and numerous freelance contributors, the Dutch Philharmonic Foundation is the largest orchestral association in the Netherlands.
history
The Dutch Philharmonic was created in 1985 from a merger of the Amsterdams Philharmonisch Orkest ( English Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra ), the Utrecht Symfonie Orkest and the Nederlands Kamerorkest . After the merger, the first chief conductor Hartmut Haenchen ensured that a solid core was retained within the organization as the Dutch chamber orchestra.
tasks
The Dutch Philharmonic is one of the permanent orchestras in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw . It also plays the majority of performances in De Nationale Opera in the Muziektheater in Amsterdam . Since 2005 the orchestra has had its own series of concerts at the Muziekcentrum Vredenburg (now Tivoli Vredenburg) in Utrecht , just like in the times of the chief conductor Hartmut Haenchen , which means that the orchestra is back in the cathedral city. Until 2002 the NedPhO also had its own series in the Beurs van Berlage , but due to financial cuts, not only Hartmut Haenchen resigned as chief conductor in protest, this series also had to be ended.
The orchestra has toured regularly in Germany , Switzerland , Japan and Hong Kong, among others .
The Dutch Philharmonic works with international soloists such as Frank Peter Zimmermann , Leonidas Kavakos , Stephen Hough , Stephen Kovacevich , Elisabeth Leonskaja , Radu Lupu , Heinrich Schiff , Natalia Gutman , Mischa Maisky , Emanuel Ax , Truls Mørk and Julia Fischer .
Conductors
Hartmut Haenchen was chief conductor from 1985 to 2002 when the Netherlands Philharmonic was founded. Under his direction, the orchestra developed into one of the leading orchestras in the Netherlands. Under his leadership, the number of visitors in the Concertgebouw rose to 13,000 per program. Haenchen initiated an extensive Mahler cycle that not only contained the complete oeuvre of Gustav Mahler , but also the works of his friends in Vienna and Amsterdam, as well as his role models. Haenchen gave a public introduction to each program and wrote a series of 14 books with "Fictional Letters from Gustav Mahler" on this occasion. The first tours to Germany , Japan and Hong Kong took place under his direction . Numerous CD recordings and DVD productions under his direction trace the rapid development of the orchestra. As a guest conductor, he stayed with the orchestra for a long time in opera productions, including several series of The Ring of the Nibelung by Richard Wagner . Haenhen's successor was Yakov Kreizberg in 2003 , but he did not hold the double position of chief conductor of the National Opera. After Kreizberg's death in March 2011, the chief conductor position from 2011–2012 was taken over by Marc Albrecht . Marc Albrecht also took on the double function as simultaneous chief conductor of the National Opera. Nuno Coelho has been assistant conductor since the 2015–2016 season. The violinist Gordon Nikolić took over the direction of the Dutch Chamber Orchestra in 2005.
Renowned guest conductors led the orchestra: Rudolf Barshai , Andrew Litton , Markus Stenz , Claus Peter Flor , Emmanuel Krivine , Yehudi Menuhin , Hans Vonk and Gerd Albrecht .
