history

With the Hanoverian Courts Constitution Act of November 8, 1850, which came into force on October 1, 1852 , administration and justice were finally separated from one another. The Gifhorn District Court was founded. The Gifhorn office was divided into the city of Gifhorn as an independent and non-official city and the house bailiwick of Gifhorn. The city of Gifhorn and the offices of Gifhorn and Papenteich formed a common district court district. In 1859 the two offices of Gifhorn and Papenteich were combined to form the office of Gifhorn. The district court of Meinersen was dissolved in 1959 and the areas in the Gifhorn district were placed under the jurisdiction of the district court of Gifhorn. In 1974 the district court district of Hankensbüttel came to the Gifhorn court. The former district court of Hankensbüttel was used as a branch office until April 1975.

building

From 1852 to 1966, the court was housed in the commandant's house of Gifhorn Castle, built in 1539. There was also an outbuilding in the prison yard and a district judge's house in the main street (today: Steinweg ). The building was in very poor condition. In 1966 a new building was opened in the palace garden. Due to the critical spatial situation, a branch in Steinweg was rented from 1979 to 1992 . From 1992 to 1996 there was a larger building on Hamburger Straße branch. In 1993 a new building was started, this was completed in 1997 and is located in the street Am Schloßgarten .
