Amy Tryon (born February 24, 1970 in Redmond , Washington , † April 12, 2012 in Duvall , Washington) was an American eventing rider . She took part in two Olympic Games.

Career

Tryon had early contact with horses through her mother, who rode herself. When she was only one year old, she and her older sister had their first own pony. At the age of five she rode her first tests. She studied at Central Washington University in Ellensburg . Amy Tryon initially worked as a firefighter, while riding as a hobby. Several championships followed with her horse Poggio II , including two Olympic Games. She had her greatest individual success in 2006 when she won the individual bronze medal at the World Equestrian Games in Aachen. In the same year she gave up her old profession and became a professional rider for good. Tryon was married for 16 years, her husband also worked in the fire station.

Amy Tryon had a low point in her career in 2007: Tryon rode the gelding Le Samurai at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event . Before the last obstacle of the cross-country course, Le Samurai stumbled and injured himself, Tryon still rode to the finish. After the ride, the gelding was taken to a veterinary clinic, but had to be euthanized due to the severity of the injury. The FEI Tribunal sentenced her to a two-month ban and a fine. The guilt-reducing assessment was that she publicly apologized for her misconduct, that she did not recognize the situation at the time and did not react correctly. In the case of deliberate behavior, a sentence up to a life-long ban would have been possible. In addition, the organizer was warned by the FEI Tribunal that the rider should have been stopped much earlier before the finish.

Amy Tryon died in her sleep on April 12, 2012 after she lay down to rest. The previous Sunday a horse had dislocated Tryon's jaw and she was operated on. As a result, according to her husband, she took muscle relaxants , pain relievers and "apparently some other things" too. The autopsy found an (accidental) overdose of combined opiates as the cause of death .
