It has crust-shaped, tomentose-brown fruiting bodies that grow directly on the bark of the infested trees. features

Macroscopic features

The fir layer mushroom forms up to 1 mm thick, crusty resupinate fruiting bodies. The smooth, corky-leathery hymenium is ocher to light brown and cracks open.

Microscopic features

The hyphae structure of the juniper layer fungus is mostly dimitic , so it consists of generative and skeletal hyphae, which can also be missing. The former are brownish hyaline, at their septa sit buckles . The latter are thick-walled and brown, at the top they are encrusted . The spores reach a size of 7–10 × 3–4  µm , on yew trees 9–12 × 3–4 µm. There is no basal, parallel hyphae layer as in the fir ( A. chailletii ) and brown felted layer fungus ( A. areolatum ).

distribution

The juniper layer fungus occurs Holarctic from Europe to North America. He prefers temperate climates .

ecology

The main substrate is the dead wood of various types of juniper ( Juniperus spp.), The European yew tree ( Taxus baccata ) is also less common . Due to its host, the juniper layer mushroom can be found mainly along sheep pastures, semi-arid lawns and sparse orchid forests.
