Anahuac is a city and seat of the county seat of Chambers County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located in southeast Texas, about 75 kilometers east of Houston , on the northeast bank of Trinity Bay and thus has access to the Gulf of Mexico in the southeast, about 45 kilometers away . Anahuac has a total area of ​​5.5 square kilometers without any significant water surface.

The city was named after an area in Mexico . The first inhabitants of this area were the Atakapan Indians. In 1721 the Frenchman Jean Baptiste de La Harpe explored this area. The area became known under the name Perry's Point , named after Colonel Henry Perry , who set up a military post here in 1816. In October 1830 the Mexican commander Colonel John Davis Bradburn took the area for Mexico with three officers and 40 soldiers. In January 1831, General Manuel de Mier y Terán officially baptized the city with the name Anahuac.

In 1862 a small Confederate outpost was established here. The first economically important event was in 1894 when the first sawmill was built by Jesse and Charles R. Cumming in 1894. The first school district was established in 1917. The Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1963 by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service about 25 kilometers southeast of the city. In 1989 the local Chamber of Commerce organized the first Gatorfest, which brought around 14,000 visitors to Fort Anahuac Park and has been held annually ever since.
