Anaquim is a Portuguese band from Coimbra that plays a mixture of indie rock and Portuguese folk and is often assigned to world music .
Band history
The band formed in 2006 in the university city of Coimbra. They borrowed their name from Anakin Skywalker , one of their favorite characters from their youth, from Star Wars . At the same time you are playing ironically with the two typically Portuguese names Ana and Quim, a common, simple call form of the frequent male name Joaquim.
With their album As Vidas dos Outros (German: The Lives of Others) they hit the zeitgeist by combining Portuguese musical traditions such as folklore and fado with international, more acoustically oriented pop / rock patterns in mostly lively songs. It was just as important that they used typical Portuguese mentality traits in the texts in a critical and humorous way. The album subsequently hit the Portuguese sales charts.
Together with names like Deolinda , OqueStrada or Os Azeitonas , they belong to a series of groups that deal with both Portuguese traditions and modernity in a playful and critical way.
