The Andenes was a Norwegian cargo ship that sailed from 1940 to 1944 on behalf of the German occupation forces , then was laid up due to severe damage in an air raid, after the end of the war until 1964 again under the Norwegian flag and then until 1998 under the Greek flag.

Construction and technical data

The Andenes was built in 1938/39 by Moss Værft & Dokk in Moss with construction number 77 for Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskab in Stokmarknes . She was 65.3 m long and 10.55 m wide, had a draft of 4.2 m and was measured at 863 GRT and 420 NRT. Its load capacity was 1405 tdw. A 4-stroke, 7-cylinder diesel engine from MAN developed 765 hp and had a top speed of 11.5 knots .

history

The ship was delivered in May 1939 and, like its two sister ships Senja and Vardø , was used in coastal freight traffic on the Hurtigruten between Oslo and Kirkenes .

During the German occupation of Norway from April 1940, she mostly drove on the route Oslo - Havnnes (Hamnnes) on the island of Uløya on the Lyngenfjord , but still with Norwegian crew . On April 2, 1944, the ship was badly damaged in an air raid in the Lyngenfjord. Two men of the crew were killed, but the ship remained buoyant and could only be repaired in a makeshift manner and then towed first to Tromsø and later to Oslo, where it was laid up in the Bunnefjord .

The ship was not repaired until after the end of the war and then used again in Hurtigruten traffic along the Norwegian coast from Oslo to Kirkenes from May 1946. It was chartered from autumn 1948 to 1952 and operated between ports in North Africa. Then the Andenes served again in Norway between Oslo and Kirkenes until 1964.

In June 1964 it was sold to Greece and renamed Pelops . In 1972 there was another sale with renaming to Faneromeni , and in 1974 another sale , in which the ship was named Panagia . In 1998 the Panagia was deleted from Lloyd's Register .
