Anders Gustaf Freiherr Koskull (born November 27, 1831 in Stockholm , Sweden ; † January 29, 1904 there ) was a Swedish genre and animal painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Koskull, offspring of the baronial Swedish line of the noble family Koskull , was the son of Court Marshal Anders Erik Koskull (1789-1856) and his wife Johanna Sofia Fredrika (nee Fleming, 1797-1868). He studied in Düsseldorf from 1852 to 1860 . The student lists of the Düsseldorf Art Academy show that he started in the 3rd quarter of 1853 and in the academic year 1853/1854 he started teaching in the Antikensaal under Karl Ferdinand Sohn . For a long time he was a private student of the Düsseldorf genre painter Adolph Tidemand . Then he switched to Thomas Couture in Paris . When he returned to Sweden, he traveled to Berlin and Dresden in 1861/1862 . In 1862 he became Agre (candidate), in 1868 Ledamot (full member) of the Stockholm Art Academy .

Koskull's genre painting preferred the depiction of children in well-designed, lyrical and lovely-looking scenes that correspond to the style of the Düsseldorf school. A relationship to the painting by Kilian Zoll can be recognized. Scenes from the interior of churches and portraits of aged people, which he later liked to paint and draw, suggest that Koskull was shaped by deeper religiosity and inwardness towards the end of his life.
