André Manaranche

André Manaranche SJ (born January 8, 1927 in Chatou ; † April 12, 2020 in Lille ) was a French Jesuit , Roman Catholic theologian and spiritual author .

Life

André Manaranche came from a farming family from the Auvergne who had emigrated to the Paris suburbs for economic reasons. In 1939 he entered the Minor Seminary of Versailles and, after completing his theological training, was ordained a priest on June 29, 1951 in Versailles . At the Institute for Social Studies of the Institut Catholique de Paris , he completed a doctorate with a dissertation on community and society in the church, inspired by the work of the German Protestant theologian, philosopher and politician Ernst Troeltsch (“Communauté et société dans l'Eglise”).

Manaranche was initially active in pastoral care in the parishes of Ermont and Saint-Symphorien de Versailles . In 1960 he joined the religious order of the Jesuits in Saint-Martin-d'Ablois . At the theological faculty in Lyon-Fourvière , he completed another theological course, which he completed in 1969 with the work "Quel salut?" In the same year he published the work "Y at-il une éthique sociale-chrétienne?" (Is there a social-Christian ethic?)

At the beginning of the 1970s he spent several years as a teacher, pastor and retreat leader in French-speaking Africa , particularly in Senegal , Niger , Benin , Burundi , Rwanda , Madagascar , Réunion and Mauritius as well as Morocco and Algeria . Guy Bagnard brought him in 1973 as a teacher at the seminary in Paray-le-Monial and the seminary in St-Sixte d'Ars . 1986 it took Edmond Barbotin , national religious adviser of the Boy Scouts of Europe for national pastoral care of Rover - Scouts in France.

On April 12, 2020, André Manaranche died at the age of 93 during the COVID-19 pandemic in France in the Saint-Jean nursing home in Lille as a result of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
