Career

society

Arendse began his professional career in 1991 with the Cape Town Spurs , now known as Ajax Cape Town. There he played for most of the 1990s. In 1995 he won the * Premier Soccer League with them . It was his first of five South African championship titles. In 1998 Arendse ventured abroad and signed with Fulham FC in England . With the then third division team, the South African rose in 1999 to the Football League Division 1 , the then second division. In two years at FCF , however, the goalkeeper failed to assert himself. For this reason he moved to the lower class club Oxford United , where Arendse stayed but only briefly before returning to South Africa. He signed a contract with Santos Cape Town and became a regular player straight away. With Santos Arendse became South African Champion in 2002 . Other titles followed. In 2003, the goalkeeper moved to league rival Mamelodi Sundowns and two years later to SuperSport United . With the Sundowns, Arendse won the Charity Spectacular Cup in 2004 and 2005 and the league in 2005. With SuperSport he dominated the league in 2007/08 and 2008/09. Both times the club prevailed and celebrated the championship. It was the first championship since the club was founded in 1994. Arendse has won the league with SuperSport and is the first and only player in the South African Premier Soccer League to win it with three different clubs.

National team

Arendse played for the South African national soccer team . Between 1995 and 2004 he made 67 appearances in the selection team and led some of them as captain on the field. In 1996 he was part of the squad that won the African Championship in their own country. Arendse was the goalkeeper of Bafana Bafana and played all six games, not missing a single minute. During the entire tournament, the goalkeeper conceded only two goals. Two years later he was in the squad for the World Cup , but had to pass due to an injury a day before the opening game against France and is leaving. Paul Evans was nominated for him , who was also injured shortly thereafter and was replaced by Simon Gopane . The year before, Arendse took part in the 1997 Confederations Cup . Again he was number one, but left substitute Brian Baloyi in the last insignificant preliminary round match . In 2000, 2002 and 2004 he was again in South Africa's squad at the African Championships. After Arendse was still the regular goalkeeper at AM 2000 , where third place was achieved, he was replaced in 2002 in Mali by Hans Vonk from number one between the posts. When he last participated in the Africa Cup in 2004 , Arendse was only number two behind Emile Baron in the Bafana Bafana , but was used again in the last group game after the elimination was confirmed against Morocco .

In 2002 the goalkeeper was part of his home country's squad at the 2002 World Cup . He went into the tournament as number one in coach Jomo Sono's team . Arendse made his World Cup debut on June 2, 2002 against Paraguay . After a win, a draw and a defeat, the selection team was eliminated shortly after the preliminary round. In 2004 he ended his national team career.

Between May and September 2002, Arendse and his national team took part in the COSAFA Cup 2002 , the South African Championship. The selection players reached the final against Malawi and secured the title after 3-1 and 1-0. In the two finals, the goalkeeper was on the field for the full playing time. It was the only participation for Arendse in this tournament.
