Andreas Christian Wolters

Andreas Christian Wolters (born June 26, 1770 in Hamburg ; † August 29, 1827 in Ritzebüttel ) was a German lawyer and Hamburg councilor .

Life

Wolters was born as the son of the Hamburg insurance broker Michael Wolters. After finishing school, he studied law at the Georg-August University in Göttingen and graduated on November 10, 1798 with a degree in law. Returned to Hamburg, he settled in his hometown as a lawyer and in 1801 became a judge at the Hamburg lower court . In 1804 the University of Göttingen appointed him doctor of law .

Wolters was a member of the Hamburg Society for the Promotion of the Arts and Useful Trades and from 1804 to 1805 head of the book, drawing and engraving collections of this society.

During the French period in Hamburg , he was a councilor for the prefecture of the Elbe estuary department and also held the office of censor .

After the French withdrew, a new commercial court was set up in Hamburg. Wolters was appointed by the council on November 27, 1815, as the first president of this court. However, since the councilor Johann Joachim Jänisch (1757-1815) died on December 4, 1815 and Wolters was elected his successor on December 11, 1815, he did not take up the office of the commercial court president, but became a councilor. Instead, on January 5, 1816, the previous senior secretary, Eduard Rentzel, was elected President.

In May 1827 he was elected bailiff in the Ritzebüttel office, but died in August of the same year of the marsh fever . His predecessor in Ritzebüttel, the later mayor Martin Hieronymus Schrötteringk (1768–1835), had the cemetery in Ritzebüttel and a crypt for the bailiffs built in 1826. Wolters remained the only bailiff who should find his final resting place in this tomb. His grave is still preserved.
