Andreas Friedrich Bauer (born August 18, 1783 in Stuttgart , † December 27, 1860 in Würzburg ) was a technician and entrepreneur.

Life

In Stuttgart, Bauer completed an apprenticeship as an optician and mechanic before he began studying mathematics in Tübingen .

In 1800 Bauer emigrated to Great Britain. There he met Friedrich Koenig in 1807 . Together they developed, among other things, the high-speed press for the London Times .

In 1818, Bauer and Koenig moved back to Germany and founded the high-speed press factory Koenig & Bauer in Oberzell near Würzburg . The company expanded rapidly and in 1828 was able to build a paper mill in the former monastery mill of the Münsterschwarzach Abbey. When Koenig died in 1833, Bauer ran the factory with his widow.

In 1847, under his direction, the high-speed press was redesigned with a capacity of 6,000 prints per hour. Another invention by Andreas F. Bauer was the use of the so-called circular motion to operate the foundation of the printing press . The first machine with this system was delivered to Leipzig in 1840.

Bauer had two daughters, Sophie and Caroline. He was the great-grandfather of the writer Gertrud von le Fort through Caroline (London 1814 - Parlow 1886), who was married to the manor owner Moritz von Wedel-Parlow (1805-1900), had 13 children and is still buried with her husband in Parlow . Bauer's grave also exists to this day, in the cemetery of Oberzell Abbey in the immediate vicinity of the original company headquarters.
