Andreas Henze

Andreas Henze (born November 27, 1833 in Viernau , † May 24, 1925 in Arnsberg ) was a German Roman Catholic priest , high school professor at the Laurentianum Arnsberg high school and meteorologist .

Life

Andreas Henze was the son of a forester and attended high school in Heiligenstadt . Then he studied Catholic theology in Münster . During his studies he became a member of the KDStV Sauerlandia Münster in the CV in 1857 . After ordination in 1861, he studied mathematics and science . He devoted himself particularly to astronomy and meteorology . In 1865 he passed the state examination for higher education. He then worked initially as an assistant for the astronomer Eduard Heis . He paid particular attention to the observation of falling stars . He completed his probationary year at the Theodorianum grammar school in Paderborn . In 1876 he moved to the Laurentianum grammar school in Arnsberg. He taught math and science. From 1889 he was a senior teacher there and in 1893 he was awarded the title of professor. In 1899 he left the school service.

In addition to his school duties, Henze devoted himself intensively to meteorology. As a recognized expert, he was known beyond the region. He has rendered services to the construction and expansion of the weather station in Arnsberg of the Prussian Meteorological Institute and climate research in the Sauerland . In recognition of his achievements, he chaired the annual meeting of the meteorological department of the German Natural Scientists' Assembly.

He also took care of the extensive butterfly collection of around 11,000 specimens in the school's natural history cabinet and wrote extensive reports on this in the high school's annual reports.

Henze was popularly referred to as the " weather maker " of the Sauerland. In 1919 he was granted honorary citizenship of the city of Arnsberg. On the occasion of his diamond jubilee as a priest in 1921, he was awarded the honorary title of clergyman . During the festival in his honor, a song was sung with the stanza: “ He counts the thunderbolts of lightning, he counts the amount of rain, he calculates the heat and cold, the storm's severe crush. “Today a street in Arnsberg reminds of Henze. He is buried in the Eichholzfriedhof in Arnsberg.
