Andreas Karabaczek

Andreas Karabaczek (born December 4, 1954 in Vienna ; † September 11, 2018 ) was an Austrian diplomat ; from 2012 to 2016 he was the Austrian ambassador to Indonesia . Then he headed the Austrian Cultural Institute in Kiev .

Life

Andreas Karabaczek came from a family of teachers and grew up with his two brothers in Istanbul . He studied economics and law at the University of Vienna . He completed his studies with a Doctor iuris . He was married and had three children.

Diplomatic career

From 1983 he worked for the Austrian Foreign Ministry (BMaA until 2007, BMeiA until February 2014, BMEIA since March 2014). From 1984 to 1985 he was an attaché at the Austrian embassy in Romania, then until 1987 first secretary for culture and press at the Austrian embassy in Turkey. He then worked for four years at the Austrian embassy in Indonesia. From 1991 to 1996 he worked for the Department for Central and Eastern Europe in the Vienna Foreign Ministry, from 1996 to 1999 he was the head of the Austrian Cultural Institute in Tehran , where he was first assigned to the embassy.

From 1999 to 2004 he was Head of Unit for UNESCO Affairs. From October 2001 he was the representative of Ministerialratin Frieda Luggauer-Gollner in the Austrian Commission for UNESCO . When drafting the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Contents and Artistic Forms of Expression , Andreas Karabaczek was a member of the Austrian delegation for consultations.

Andreas Karabaczek held his first embassy post from 2005 to 2011 as the Austrian ambassador in Muscat , responsible for Oman and Yemen . The embassy was closed due to austerity measures by the Austrian Foreign Ministry, so there is no successor there. Since February 14, 2012, he has been the successor to Klaus Wölfer in Jakarta with responsibility for Indonesia, Singapore (accreditation there on March 29, 2012) and East Timor (Timor-Leste). He was also an ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations ( ASEAN ). In September 2016 he left this post and moved to Kiev as head of the Austrian Cultural Institute . His successor in Jakarta was Helene Steinhäusl .
