Andreas Rabl (born October 24, 1972 in Wels ) is an Austrian politician of the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) . He has been mayor of the Upper Austrian city ​​of Wels since 2015 .

Life

Andreas Rabl attended the Puchberg elementary school and graduated from the Wels High School in 1991. From 1991 to 1997 he studied law at the University of Vienna (Mag. Iur.). From 1996 to 1997 he practiced as an assistant in the European Parliament , after which he was a legal intern at the Regional Court of Wels . In 1998 he completed military service with the Austrian Armed Forces.

Since 1998 Andreas Rabl has also been working as a rhetoric and communication trainer. From 1999 to 2003 he was a trainee lawyer in a law firm in Wels and Vienna. After that, Rabl worked from 2003 to 2015 as an independent lawyer specializing in insolvency and business law, and in 2003 he received his doctorate. iur. From 2004 to 2015 he also worked as a university lecturer for civil law and commercial law at the university of applied sciences in Wels .

Since 2001 he has been a member of the Wels municipal council. He was a city councilor from 2009 to 2013 and vice mayor from 2013 to 2015. Since November 9, 2015, he has been the successor to Peter Koits (SPÖ) mayor of Wels. Most recently, Rabl was elected in the second ballot in 2015 with 62.97 percent of the valid votes.

Rabl is the first FPÖ mayor of an Upper Austrian statutory town and the first Wels mayor since 1946 who is not provided by the SPÖ. At the beginning of 2016 he caused a sensation across Austria with the announcement that the municipal kindergartens would be enacted a code of values . According to this code, every child must be able to recite five German-language songs and poems . However, this code was later defused.

In July 2018, an invitation issued by Rabl and his party colleague Manfred Haimbuchner to the Italian politician and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini to spend his vacation in Wels in Upper Austria caused an international sensation. Salvini had previously been declared an "undesirable person" by the Mallorca Island Council due to statements that were xenophobic and inhumane. The invitation of Rabl and Haimbuchner was criticized by local parliamentary groups of the SPÖ, Greens, Neos, ÖVP and hoteliers. Salvini thanked for the invitation, but preferred to vacation on the Adriatic.
